Going With The Grain

Rivers Edge Thumbnail

Ever wonder what happens when we’re done floor malting, micro malting, smoking, roasting and mashing our barley, wheat and rye?

We don’t like seeing anything go to waste, so we give away our spent grains to farmers near the Rogue Brewery in Newport, Oregon.

It helps out everybody. We don’t dump the grain in the landfill. Our fellow farmers get a free source of high fiber, high protein, low fat supplemental feed for their livestock.

Walker Farms: Siletz, Oregon

Walker Farms

Our neighbors at Walker Farms pick up 6,000 pounds of Rogue spent grain from our Brewery every month and feed it to their beef cattle, pigs, lambs, turkeys and chickens.

It helps them stay in business. The cost of feed is their biggest expense and by using our spent grain they’ve cut those costs more than a third.

Rivers Edge Chevre: Logsden, Oregon

Pat Morford crafts her award winning chevre at her farm on the Siletz River in the Oregon Coast Range where she feeds Rogue spent grain to her dairy goats and sheep.

We also collaborate with Pat in another way. Her Mayor Of Nye Beach cheese is washed for a minimum of two months in our Dead Guy Ale.

But that’s not where this story ends. Soon we’ll be serving the meat and cheese from Walker Farms and Rivers Edge at our pubs. The beer and spirits in your glass and the food on your plate will be grown with Rogue Farms grain. The farm to table journey will be complete.

25 years ago, Mo Niemi helped us get started in Newport if we promised to “feed the fishermen”, her way of telling us to give back to our local community. Today, we extend that promise to our fellow farmers by helping them feed their animals. And in return, they will help us feed the Rogue Nation.

Please visit us at Rogue Farms and see how we grow seven varieties of hops, wheat, corn, pumpkins, jalapeños, marionberries, honey, coriander, juniper, angelica root, orris root, ginger and other ingredients in our proprietary palate of flavors for our beers and spirits.
